Work Experience
Lead Electrical Engineer
Illini Solar Car• October 2020 - Present
Illini Solar Car is a student-led engineering project team that designs, builds, and races solar electric race cars in competitions. I joined ISC’s electrical team and pit crew responsible for design and delivery of battery systems for a solar powered car that drove across the US as part of the 2021 American Solar Challenge. My role is as Lead Systems Designer for electrical system architecture and implementation, with boards designed from scratch and custom coding. The electrical system is the heart of what makes the car operate, as the car requires a reliable electrical system from the overarching power system of the motors, custom built battery, and solar array, down to the snippets of code that flash the blinkers. The electrical team designs the system to work especially for solar racing. Together this creates a fully functioning street legal vehicle that can reliably drive across continents. My contribution included: • Planned system interfaces, interactions, and interconnections. Reviewed PCBs and electrical schematics during board reviews before boards were soldered and added to vehicle. • Architected mechanical and electrical design of 420 cell Li-Ion battery specifically for solar racing capabilities. The process required testing of 700 cells with charge/discharge curves logged and characterized. The 420 cells were spot welded and arranged into modules of the battery pack (15 cells per module, 28 modules per string, strings in parallel 1). • Tested battery pack in a closed-track race during Formula Sun Grand Prix 2021, earning a third-place finish with 230 laps on a 2.5-mile track over three days. The vehicle placed second in miles driven during the 2021 American Solar Challenge with over 1000 miles driven (before penalties) in five days.
