    the problem statement says

    The restriction is, that you need to accomplish this with functional programming , why functional programming ?

      It's a copy-paste challenge from the functional domain section on the site. I don't think that applies here

        I wish I knew this before writing an immutable local-variable free version in Bash. It turns out Bash really really wasn't designed for that sort of stuff. o_o
