Image Detection Notice
This Image Detection Notice supplements and is part of the HackerRank Privacy Policy with respect to HackerRank’s collection and processing of facial images in connection with the use of some HackerRank features. Please check our Privacy Policy for any capitalized terms that are not separately defined in this Notice; those capitalized terms here will have the same definition as within the Privacy Policy.
When Does HackerRank Collect and Process Facial Images?
HackerRank only collects your facial image in its role as a processor/service provider providing its Services to an Employer and only in certain circumstances.
Whether or not we collect and process your facial image depends on whether you participate in a Candidate Feature for which the Employer has enabled certain functionality that allows for the collection of facial image within a Candidate Feature. In that case, we will ask for your consent to collect facial image before you participate in that Candidate Feature. If you consent, then we will collect and process your facial image.
How Do We Collect and Process Facial Images?
We collect and process facial images for the purpose of providing our Services to the Employer who has enabled the collection of facial images within a Candidate Feature.
If you participate in a Candidate Feature that collects and processes your facial image, then our Services capture your facial images taken from your webcam or device at intervals during your participation in the Candidate Feature. We then use Amazon Rekognition, provided by AWS, to analyze those images for the purpose of matching to the images to detect whether the images captured match or change during your participation in the Candidate Feature. Amazon Rekognition generates results to the Employer, which indicate the results of the AWS Rekognition matching analysis.
You can find more information about Amazon Rekognition here: Amazon Rekognition.
Is My Facial Image Used to Uniquely Identify Me?
No. We do not use your facial image for the purposes of uniquely identifying who you are. AWS Rekognition compares the images captured to one another only to detect whether the faces captured match. AWS Rekognition does not identify the person whose face is captured.
How Does HackerRank Store and Protect Facial Images?
HackerRank stores, transmits, and protects your facial image using the reasonable standard of care within HackerRank’s industry and in a manner that is the same as or more protective than the manner in which HackerRank stores, transmits, and protects other information of similar type. We use industry-standard encryption and access controls. We only retain facial images for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected or as required by law.
How Does HackerRank Disclose My Facial Image?
We only disclose your facial images to the Employer using the Candidate Feature and to AWS for use of Rekognition. We disclose your image only in connection with our provision of Services to the applicable Employer:
HackerRank’s Retention of Facial Images

And in that case, for Candidates located in Illinois, in accordance with Illinois law and unless a different retention period is required or permitted by applicable law, HackerRank will retain your facial image and any associated identifying information only until the first of the following occurs, at which time we will destroy your facial image:
